BANDS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Warped Tour Edition

August 18, 2008

Yesterday I attended the Los Angeles stop of Warped Tour, followed by a Warped Tour afterparty that went to the wee hours of this morning... I am beat. It was hot and dirty and we had a blast! Here are my two bands you should know from Warped Tour.

Family Force 5 was reccomended to me by several friend when I arrived at the show... I was told that they were the "talk of the tour" and they were right. The bands stage act is great with everything from dancing hearts to hulk hands on the lead singer. Their songs are a dance party that will get anybody to "shake it like an earthquake", and had the crowd at Warped Tour on their toes
Check out Family Force 5's myspace page and listen to GET YOUR BACK OFF THE WALL and LUV ADDICT, HERE!

3OH!3 played the Notorious Riot! Warped Tour after-party last night. The group of 4 half naked guys, one of which won the coveted "number one crush" appointment on Warped Tour, were jumpin all over the stage with the crowd dancing and enjoying the effects of the open bar. They played the Hurley.com stage for the legnth of the tour, though I missed their set Sunday, if it was anything like how they played at the after-party then I am sure they were hosting a dance party. This is a band you wont want to miss when they come through your town.

BANDS YOU SHOULD KNOW vol 2

August 13, 2008

So, we have had a couple of technical difficulites over the last week... Sorry for the late update.

Moving on...

Meiko is a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles. A previous employee of Hotel Cafe, it is no surprise that you could find her touring the nation this last year on the Hotel Cafe Tour with Joshua Radin and Ingrid Michaelson. Meiko is a beautiful songwriter with a knack to those relationship songs that don't sound like the standard relationship songs, not the "swept off my feet" but the "we are so lucky to live in this shitty apartment together" songs. This is probably why I love her so much.
Check out Meiko's myspace page and listen to BOYS WITH GIRLFRIENDS and PIANO SONG, HERE!

Plushgun is a band formed by Dan, wish I had asked his last name, in a NY city apartment bedroom. Dan got some amazing musicicians and put together a band off of the demos recorded in his bedroom, and BAM! After only a year the band's music was being licensed to a TV show, playing SXSW and flying out to play a show here at LA's Viper Room... Quite the progress if you ask me. With an incredible group of fans (Plushies) they are set to take over the world...

Retone Records introduces BANDS YOU SHOULD KNOW

July 29, 2008

Being the music fans that we are, Tony and I were discussing how we could give all you internetees insight into our vast musical knowledge... There was talks of a top 40 chart, among other things, but today as I was listening to a recommendation from a friend and browsing RCRDLBL.com, I decided that maybe I should just give you insight into the bands of tomorrow with a new addition to the website, BANDS YOU SHOULD KNOW!

To kick off the series, I would like to introduce you to two up-and-coming bands...

Matt Sheehy and the Believers are a group from Portland, Oregon. With the new self released album TIGERPHOBIA being released, I was able to catch Matt play a show at the Roxy in Hollywood with his long time friend Kaki King. Beautifully written, TIGERPHOBIA has yet to leave my frequently played list of CDs since the show.
Check out Matt's myspace page and listen to the song FREEWAY, HERE!

Miniature Tigers are a rockin band from LA/Phoenix (I swoooore they were from LA, they must have moved...). Anyway, not only do they have a super catchy single THE WOLF, but their name is quite possibly the cutest thing ever. I mean, how many bad band names have you heard recently, I have heard a lot, but this is rather good... Look:

Eastern Conference ChampionsOur very good friends Eastern Conference Champions are back on the road with the band Vast. Last I heard they were trudging through the snow somewhere in Laramie, WY on their way to Denver. Here are the dates, check them out if you can, they are awesome live, I promise. Be sure to say hello to Vern and ask him for his moustache care tips. Their new album Ameritown is available now online and in fine record stores everywhere. Ameritown is chock full of emotionally charged songs that have powerful hooks, lots of dynamics, and great melodies. Voxhaul Broadcast Plans For Big and Busy New Year

January 4, 2008

 The Echo (mp3)

Voxhaul Broadcast

Our very own Voxhaul Broadcast is starting to get noticed. Last Thanksgiving the Los Angeles Times cited their “twitchy, soul-infused rock” in naming them “one to watch in 2008” in their Buzz Band column. Laist.com called their EP Rotten Apples “stupendous” while naming it one of the top 100 albums of 2007. Expect a busy year from the band as they debut their video for Rotten Apples, record a bunch of new tracks, and play loads of shows all over the place.

A poem to kick things off

January 3, 2008

Walt Whitman

We thought we would start with a poem to kick off the new Retone Records website. Here is one by that famous rock star of the 19th Century Walt Whitman. It is from the book Walt Whitman, Selected Poems edited by Harold Bloom and published by The Library of America as part of its American Poets Project.

City of Orgies

City of orgies, walks and joys, City whom that I have lived and sung in your midst will one day make you illustrious, Not the pageants of you, not your shifting tableaus, your spectacles, repay me. Not the interminable rows of your houses, nor the ships at the wharves, Nor the processions in the streets, nor the bright windows with goods in them, Nor to converse with learn'd persons, or bear my share in the soiree or feast; Not those, but as I pass O Manhattan, your frequent and swift flash of eyes offering me love, Offering response to my own – these repay me, Lovers, continual lovers, only repay me.
